We have 3 Cornish cross meat birds that are about 6 weeks old, and I think they're ready to butcher... the problem is, I can't do it ... and my dh (who wanted these, I just wanted layers) doesn't have time. The only place we can find to do it doesn't have openings til the 31st of may... will they get tough? Will they survive until then?

You can raise CX to 10 weeks. You'll need to keep the protein in their diet low. Hot weather will be your enemy. It's a bit of a gamble though.

Just put them in the freezer. You can do it. You really can. 3 birds, a couple of sharp knives, a kleenex or two and about an hour. We're with you.

Its not the blood part that bothers me... I love them! I knew this would happen when he bought them.... ugh... well I guess we will see if they make it to the 31st... cause I don't have the heart! Thia is why I wanted layers! Lol I don't think I'd cut it as a farm wife back in the day!

Watch the videos of people doing it, as many times as you can. That helps ease the anxiety, and makes you feel like you are more familiar with the task. I'd say use a cone of some kind. The worst part is over in 1-2 minutes. It's never easy, but you'll feel more capable once you get through it.

Since the usual time to butcher them is 8-10 weeks, you'll be fine to get them done the end of May. better make your reservations right now, or you will lose that slot.
