I didn't used to keep alot water available outside figuring they would stick close to the coop that way. Then I started noticing really dry combs and my DH diagnosed them as being dehydrated. Now they have lots of outside water sources available to them. It's a hassle for me, cleaning and filling all those water sources several times daily, but better for the chickens.
