Bobwhite are new world quail. Buttons are old world quail. They are both called quail because of their similar appearance but are completely unrelated.
They require different care and have different hardiness characteristics.

Thank you! I will get some research done on buttons then! Jeez! Paid extra for tuxedo bobs and everything. Is it normal to have the wrong kind in a order?

Mine seems to like hays in general, as a plaything or as a nest lining. My coturnix pet quail would peck at stray hays from the guinea pig cage and have fun messing around. When she went a little broody she definutely preferred hays to wood shavings. Maybe you could stack up your hay somewhere in the corner and your quails will have fun digging, nesting, and pecking at the mound.

That’s exactly what I tried! I sprinkled some in a pile away from the lamp(just a tad worried about it being too warm if I add an insulator like hay) and then some in their sparkling water box they use during “night” (when they get tired of the lamp” they love it! Completely enthralled by picking a piece up, flying onto the box, dropping it off the roof, then doing it again. I’ll try to get a video. It’s the cutest thing ever!
