Hey there. I was sent 15 red broilers by mistake and now they are 9 wks old and ready to butcher. My question was can I keep a few hens to produce more meat birds?
And any other helpful hints for a first time butcher would be great!! Thanks!!

I wouldn't...you have to restrict their feed intake to stunt their growth to be used a reproduction stock. Once they get to the ready for butcher stage they just get to big and start having issues. Having said that yes folks have done it.

You stated red broilers, and not cornish rocks, then you can if you want without issues. I raised some years ago and they were actually not bad layers either. Just my opinion.

Do you have any pictures of ur birds u wouldnt mind sharing? I've never seen a red broiler!

Not sure if they are pure bred or not, but if they are a cross bred type, their offspring will not breed true, meaning unequal weight gain and potentially chicks that don't look like their parents.
