Hi there everyone,

I have 2 cochin hens (around 10 months) that started laying eggs in November. It started with an egg every other day and at one point, they were laying an egg each a day. Around early december, one went broody while the other just stopped laying.
The broody is now a busy mama to 3 week old chicks while the other has not layed any more eggs.

Is this normal? How long does it take before they start laying again?

The length of daylight will determine when the one hen will start to lay again. The broody will begin laying a few weeks after she weans her chicks, around six to ten weeks of age generally.

Im in Malaysia, we generally get daylight from 7.30am to 7pm all year round. Does daylight still play a role though in my case?
Noted on the broody, thank you 😊

Your location is useful information. Why don't you access your profile and enter your location so we all will know that in the future.

That's plenty of daylight for laying. However, hens do take breaks to reset their reproductive systems. This is normal.

There are extenuating circumstances that affect egg laying, too. If a hen doesn't get enough protein and calories, she won't lay. A hen could have an infection and not lay. Stress from predators or construction activity can interfere with egg laying. A change in habitat can affect egg laying.

Goodness was not aware environment plays a role in their egg laying as well, thanm you for sharing. Guess I've got some major observing and guessing to do 😅

Someone else just asked about laying breaks nearer the equator.
I will tag @Pork Pie here too.

Here's how to add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

I’ve not kept specific breeds (with the exception of leghorns) - rather landrace birds bred specifically for frequent laying. i agree with aart that the bird in question may have some issue affecting laying.
