Hi, noobie here on the lower left coast starting my first small flock of 4 layers.

I am starting to let my now 3 month old girls our of their coop to free range in the back yard near the house, doing about a half hour or more "Chicken TV" a day.

I've got a giant oak tree in the middle of my back deck and have swept about 3 years worth of leaves and acorns off the edge next to the deck. The pile can be up to a foot high by 2 feed wide and runs about 20 feet or more around part of the deck.

Yesterday they started digging in that pile, going absolutely bonkers eating up tons of pincher bugs. I had to chase them away yesterday to get them to stop after gorging for a half hour and the same thing today. They plowed through about 10 cubic feet of "mulch" so far and I love it but am worried they're eating too many bugs.

Is there "too much" when it comes to the girls eating bugs? We've got LOTS of bugs here for them to enjoy.

No problem they will be fine and your cost for feed will go down.
Send me some bugs! LOL

Bugs are good for them. My chickens forage all day long, eating anything they can catch.

That's good news, thanks all. I sure wish I could house train them LOL!!

You can almost see the smile on their faces when I come out to open the coop in the evening.

If you want to bring your flock to Rural San Diego for a play date come on down, but I don't think I'll be able to mail any pincer bugs anywhere. :)
