I first purchased a small coop for my chickens which was only meant to be a temporary home for them due to needing to save money and start building their actual coop. They are now 16 weeks old and their new home will be ready by Wednesday. I was wondering if it was a good size for my three Hens. I also would like to know if I should have a bedding of something on the inside? They are my first chickens, so I am still learning.
Here is something similar to what we're working on.

It is good to put wood shavings or straw on the floor for easier cleaning. I use hay . You can also use grass clippings which dry and become similar to hay. If you only keep a few chickens, then a small coop is fine. Overcrowding is a problem with less than ideal solutions .. I am talking about what to do with those extra. I personally only keep chickens as pets and don't eat my own... Falling into the trap of getting too many chickens is referred to as chicken math .

Then you ether have to expand your facilities, or reduce flock size. You may also have village limits where you live.

Pine shavings (not cedar) on the floor, straw in the nest boxes.

I have almost the same design and it is perfect for three or four birds. I'm going to have six birds in mine soon, which is really pushing the limits, so I fenced it in a big run and added an auto door on it to let them out of the tractor every morning. Still, I'm concerned about the roosting space, so I plan on building something bigger soon.

The biggest drawback to this design is ventilation in the winter time. The birds are at the same height as the windows so if you open them they will get direct wind on them. The only place to vent then is out the top really, and their heads/combs are only inches from the roof when standing on the bars. Not ideal (I had some frost bitten combs) but it works.

EDIT: On second glance the coop pictured is smaller than I thought (or those are giant chickens ;)). It looks like about 3x6, whereas mine is more like 4x8. Still it should be fine for three chickens that can free range for a couple hours a day.

It looks a little small too me. Are you planning on any free ranging? This would help.

That is too small for even those 2 hens in the pic...make me think 'packed in like sardines'.

@cavemanrich Thank you! I currentlyuse hay, but my chickens like to kick it out. I use.grass and they leave it alone or even eat it. yes I only plan on having and keeping the three as pets. I love them too much. plus I wouldn't be able to have anymore. I have very little space.
