Even the largest Black Rat Snakes cease to be an issue for chicks once they are about 5 weeks old. I have yet to see the Black Rat Snake take on something too large to swallow. Other snakes like those eating fish more likely to bite into more than they can swallow. That said, I make efforts to keep such critters away from younger chicks and nesting area.
