i built a miniature version of a full size chicken coop with run area. For heat source I have a smalle 350 watt space heater with a digital thermostat. I have tested it and it will keep the covered portion consistently at whatever temp I set the thermostat up to 95 degrees. A friend said that I need a lightbulb instead. The brooder is actually in my backyard where the chicks could actually walk outside onto the grass during the day or stay inside the closed in area if they get cold. Do I have to use a lightbulb or is the natural cycle of sunlight and nighttime better

You do not need to use a light bulb.

There are lots of different space heaters, so just be sure it is set up as safe as it can be, chicks can't touch the heating element, pine shavings etc can't be kicked up against it, etc.

Please show pic of space heater and coop.
Chicks need a warm place just big enough for all of them, and a cooler place.

Oh, and, Welcome to BYC!

It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!
