I was thinking of getting a silkie since they are prone to sitting (my hens aren't except for one that wasn't super serious about it) and I would like to have one. Then I would buy some fertile eggs and have her sit on them. That way I get the silkie that I want, I can pick which other breeds I would like to have, and I don't have to be in charge of hatching them or raising them since there is not enough time in the day for me as it is.

Does this sound fool-proof? What am I missing or not seeing that could go wrong or not work out right? I don't even know if this is the way I am going to go just wanted thoughts on it.

Only a few things you should watch for... She may just decide not to sit and give up... Have had a few hens do that. Also you will have to get eggs when she decides to go broody. The best bet is to find a local breeder and get eggs from them. Also get none expensive eggs unless you have a backup incubator because as always animals are animals and they can just get up and walk away and your stuck with a clutch of eggs all cold. I was goign to try this once but i'm glad I didn't because my broody got up and left her eggs after 5 days.

Was she a silkie? I have heard they tend to become broody far better than other hens. Either way, it does make sense not to bet all my hopes on her being broody cause knowing my luck, you are right, she would be the one silkie out of every silkie known to man that would not turn broody.
