Hi all,

I have a small pond that attracts a mallard each year. She builds her nest on a very small island in the middle each year. 8 hatched and over one weekend all 8 disappeared. We found 4, one that had fallen into a drainage ditch, 2 had drowned and one that appeared squashed. The other 4 were never found but in previous years we have had a big issues with magpies carrying them off. To try and deter them now, as she is sitting on another clutch that we predict will hatch in the following days, I have hung up CDs from trees and laid some by the pond itself. I haven't seen any magpies since, but it also appears to be putting off the pigeons that usually come down. My question is, could this also scare the duck and should I remove them?

Not sure if it will scare the ducks but have you considered you might have snapping turtles they prey on water fowl babies and adults too. I know people put CD hanging from trees etc to scare off hawks so most likely it won't scare the ducks.

I would doubt it. It is a closed off, enclosed pond in a courtyard with no outside access. And I am sure turtles were never introduced and would have no way of getting there. Plus it is a very, very small pond.

I put a new stump in my duck run and it has been there since Tuesday - it is lava to them. :D
They love to perch on the other stump that is smaller, but this new one they want nothing to do with it.
I figure that they will get used to it in a week or two.
So, yeah anything new - they will avoid.

I don't have a pond but I'm in an area with quite a few. Every year I find turtles migrating through my yard. It may be worth double checking to make sure none have dropped in uninvited.
