Will this work for a brooder?

My dad just bought an old tractor. It was cheap. Reaaaal cheap. Probably because the engine was in pieces in a crate. Which brings me to my question.

Can I pressure wash this thing out (with detergent of course) and convert it into a brooder? I plan on having six birds. The crate is 34" x 30.5". How much room would six birds need for their last week in a brooder before they move to the big chicken house?

It looks like it would work, possibly a bit on the short side. They will be up on the sides in a few weeks.

I think it might be slightly cramped, however I would make it work if needed.

How tall is the crate? In my experience they start jumping out around the second week. If you make sure there is plenty of ventilation and room for them to get away from the heat if it gets to warm. Using a small piece of cloth strung across from the top but not reaching more than half way keeps heat in and allows them an escape if needed. I've used all kinds of things as a brooder, just make sure that it thoughly dries before use. Most important enjoy them!
