I
just bought some chicks but I am catching the bug and am wanting to either make or buy an incubator. If you have any suggestions I would greatly appericate it. you can also post the kinds of thermometer and hygrometer that you use as well.

If you wouldnt mind posting what you use if you made your incubator that would be awesome as well. Thanks Dustin

I have 4 of them but they are much cheaper at wall mart , and to set the humidity mix ½ cup of water and ½ cup of salt mix well and put the cup in a plastic zip lock bag set the unit in beside it seal it up and wait 12 hours , the humidity should read 75, if it reads other than that ,add or subtract the #'s and write it on the edge somewhere then add or subtract it from your future readings .
one of mine read perfectly the other 3 are -15 , -20 ,, +10 , no way to change them just know what they read off .

Ok thanks for the advice. I will check them out at walmart. why do you put it in a half cup of salt water and fresh water? Should I get back ups or should one be good for some time?

I've got that same thermometer/hygrometer and I'm already planning on taking it back. It's extremely slow on temperature readings. I had taken it outside to check on temperature swings and it took about 10 minutes for it to even register that it was in a different temperature environment. And another 10 minutes or so before it got even close to what the correct temp was. Maybe I'm expecting too much for the price I paid (about 7 bucks). Either that or I picked up a dud.

You do the salt and water mix to check/calibrate your hygrometer. Check out this link for more detail

Yeah I was going to go to walmart tomarrow and get it one. If there is a different one that would work better I would be game for spending more money for one that would work better. Thanks for the link.

My thermometer update- I set up my thermometer on our AC/heater digital thermostat. When I got up this morning, they were both reading the same temp. Also, at the moment I am checking the hygrometer difference by doing the salt water thing. Right now it's reading 67% but I also set it up about 30 minutes ago. I'm starting to reconsider taking it back to Wal-Mart. As long as it's reading the correct temp and I know how it's reading the humidity, I suppose it doesn't matter how slow it reads the correct temp. As long as it reads it right.

Now I'm not trusting the thermometer that I used to compare it to in the first place!

Hang onto your thermometer. Do your tests/checks on it. Unless you really want to spend a pretty penny on a more expensive one, of course.
