hi i have a flock of 12 11 hens and 1 rooster

the are almost 6 mots old

will a turkey get along with the chickens

will they fight

The thing is that turkeys are soo much bigger than chickens that I would be worried about them getting stepped on.

Also, turkeys get sick a lot more easily than chickens and ducks, may transfer harmful diseases over to your chickens (i.e. blackhead, etc.).

It would probably be best to house them separately but it's up to you.

Blackheads is more transmittable from chickens to turkeys. But it a soil Bourne illness. Check with your local extension office to see if it's prevelant in your area.

I keep Turkey's and chickens together no issues mixing them so far.

If you do keep them together get more than 1 Turkey as they are a flock bird and do better with more of their own.

If you get just 1 make sure it's a hen. If you get a tom when it's breeding season he will try to mate chickens and that will result in a flat dead chicken.

Turkey's are more personable that chickens.

Good luck in your decision

I would be a little concerned about blackhead ... however I know of lots of people who have no problems keeping chickens and turkeys together ... really your call...

They get along fine, turkeys won't step on the chickens they do look where they're going and they are slow to boot. Blackhead is possible but chickens have a higher tolerance than turkeys to start with. The mateing thing not saying it doesn't happen just I've never seen it of course the tom had hens of his own and honestly cared less about the chicken girls. Ultimately up to op to decide but it can be and has been done before. :)

Some folks won't ever have a problem mixing chickens with turkeys (or Pheasant) and others will loose them to the blackhead that's not a problem with chickens. It depends on what parasites are common enough in your specific environment; something you may find out the hard way. You could have fecals run on your chicken poo first, and reconsider if gapeworm turns up. Mary

I had bourbon reds several years ago and they did fine with the chickens. Last year I tried broad breasted for the freezer. Only one made it - the rest were lost to blackhead. Won't be trying turkeys again.

You should talk to your county extension office to see if blackhead is a problem in your area.

My property is high and dry, with sandy soil. A mile down the road, friends have clay soil and a pond. They lost both pheasants and chickens to gapeworm and other intestinal parasites that have (knock wood!) never been a problem here with my chickens. I have no plans to ty pheasants (way to loud!) or turkeys, nice as they can be. Mary
