Window Design in Coop Question

I would put it up high, windows aren't for chicken enjoyment they are for functionality, you need to be able to get the crap air out and as everything will rise the higher window will be more functional,it will allow plenty of light as they will probably only be in to roost and lay eggs.

Thanks for the input- You make a good point regarding ventilation. Smells and heat all probably rise!

Your coop is very nice although a different style than mine and trust me I know when you put so much work into it you want it to look nice, this is how I did my vents they are hinged at the top so no water gets in and I leave it open all the time I will close it a little more in the winter but seeing your building ability I'm positive you can make it functional and eye appealing, post more pics when you choose a style to go with. Congratulations on a beautiful coop, love the color.

Thanks Jetdog- This project has taken on a life of its own and I find myself carefully reviewing every detail both aesthetically and functionally for the girls! (form follows function!) We plan on having a window inset on both sides with hinges (the window on the east side will hing up during the day with a hook and the window on the front if we go with the vertical will hinge back on itself 180 degrees. I am leaning towards the vertical as I think it will provide the best of both worlds- a window up top to help heat escape, and a narrow view for the girls to peek out and me to be able to check on them in the coop without opening the door to that area. Your coop looks great- a functional window is key, did you use acrylic or glass for the pane or is it a solid panel? it is tough to see from the angle.

It's solid it's actually the cut out piece with trim added to match and make it a little wider to assure the rain can't blow in hardware cloth and window screen over the opening, helps to keep bees and mosquitoes out, a small piece of chain lets me adjust how much air comes and goes.

So we went with the vertical window design and mom and dad and the girls couldn't be happier- it is very nice being able to see them from the kitchen window too! They spent their first night in the coop last night in a typical summer rain storm with thunder and lightning. I was happy to see them this morning pecking around as usual. I am going to keep them confined to the coop for a week and finish up the run in the meantime. I hope to have them in the run this weekend. I am planning on using sand for the coop and run, but haven't figured out what type of sand I am supposed to be using- any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks all!

That's gorgeous! I love the little face in the window - too cute! I think you've got the best of both worlds - chickens can see out and good ventilation.

Your whole coop & run is just stunning. You guys are master carpenters, for sure!

Thanks 6of6! It has been a very fun project and I am happy the girls are happy! Now to finish it up and start enjoying!

Well it has been a VERY LONG first week of the girls being in the coop and I am excited to get them into the run this weekend. Last night we hung the door for the run and finished up some of the trim work. I think another half day's worth of work and these girls should be able to wake up this weekend with a functioning pop door into the run! Can't wait- I think they deserve it for surviving their first week in their coop with horrendous thunder storms and rain!
