I am in the process of building my coop for my 11 three week old chicks. My dad and I recently remodeled a house and I kept a 3' x 4' window that we replaced. I am wondering if it will be a problem if I used this window as the back of the laying boxes so I can simply walk by on the outside and see if there are eggs in the boxes.
I think it seems like it would be fine, but I don't know if it would make the hens uncomfortable for any reasons.

Your opinions / experience is much appreciated!

My guess is that it probably would be ok, once chickens learn where to lay they a very faithful about laying there. I will say this chickens do like or it is said that chickens like "dark" places to lay so if you do use the window and they won't lay in it you could always replace it. I've done experiments on this by providing wooden boxes with a only one end open and they still laid the majority of their eggs in the "store box" nest boxes.
Make sure that the sun does not shine on it though it would act like a magnifying glass and make it too hot and then they most likely will not use it.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll try putting it in. The sun won't shine on it, but if it is still too bright for them to lay by it I can always try some nice dark/thick curtains.

I think it's a good idea. I think it would depend on how much was going on outside that window. Six of our eight chickens can drop an egg pretty much anywhere but the other two are very particular. One will wait for the nest box she favors even though she is the low hen and get last bids on pretty much everything. The other one is so neurotic that she will leave the nest box mid egg song if I open the clean out door to clean the cop floor even though I am 8 feet away and can't actually reach her.
