Windows in the coop

Don't forget to put at least one window on the east side, and preferably low down. This way, on cold mornings, they can sit in front of the glass and warm up to the morning light!

My coop is really basic. 4 sides. 8x8 6ft in front 4ft in the back. 2 windows that I still need to frame and put glass in. There is wire over them. 2x4inch fencing and then 1/2 hardware cloth. My girls did good all winter with just several layers of thick plastic over them.

I have a tin roof. $5 each panel at Lowe's. Plus a skylight.

I don't know if they didn't lay over winter because of the lack of light, molting (in winter!!) or being attacked by dogs. But from Christmas through Valentines I got nothing. Now I'm getting 3-5 a day from my 5 girls.

PS this is before I attached the new huge run. That plain piece of wood on the front is where my pop door is now.

I think extremes in climate would make the semi-transparent material for the roof less desirable. Someone mentioned the possibility it may not be as sound with extreme snow loads (not a builder or an engineer so I don't know but it makes sense). On the flip side, in a very hot climate like we have here in Missouri for a couple months every summer, a coop with that stuff on top would be HOT. We have a potting shed here that was built by an uncle with that roofing material on it and you can't stand to be in there in July or Aug. It could be ameliorated by circulation via windows, but its still pretty darn hot.
