Windows, on the cheap ( how)

Try a custom window place. They always have windows that were mismeasured and they are willing to let them go cheap. I picked up 2 replacement windows that way for $10 apiece. Double pane, double hung. Very nice windows too.

We used plexiglass. We installed them so we can slide them up and down. Using two slats on each side that allowed the plexiglass to slide and then a peg on the bottom that you can adjust up and down to open/close the window in 4 positions or remove it completely.

From the replies, it looks like you're getting lots of ideas about where to find windows.

As far as finding windows that "open and close," it might be simpler than you think. Mine are just hinged at the top. I use a chain to hold them open in the summer.

For windows in my coop, I just cut the hole out where I wanted them, then covered it with the 1x2 wire to keep out predators, and placed a cover out of wood on hinges so it can stay closed during the winter and just open it up for the summer. That was about the cheapest way I could find and during the summer, I can just leave it open 24/7 for ventilation and predator proofed. Hope that makes sense!!

I'll second the E-Bay idea. I got all the windows for my coop there. The top windows are old basement windows. The side windows were salvaged from an old house. The side windows slide open for the warmer months. The top windows open up and out.

Craigslist for fixed windows, cheap-o sliding shed windows for ventilation. Somebody's always switching out windows, somewhere, but in my experience the framing on used sashes is usually too tweaked. My fixed windows are all premium argon filled doublepane, for $20 each from some guy, whereas my 1x3' sliders ran about $22 brand new.

Ebay...factor in shipping costs and hazards! Usually not worth it for bulky/low cost items like cheap windows. Not to mention, glass has this strange brittle quality that UPS and FedEx deliverers are always so anxious to test...

Ours work that way, too. Awning style windows also have the added benefit of preventing rain from blowing into the coop during storms.
