Sorry if this is the wrong forum. I’m not sure how to find an answer because I don’t know what to search for. I have added a photo of my hens wings. They have been like this since spring. Is there something wrong with her or is it just a fluke? Is there something I can do? Thanks

Looks like she's not molted yet. The feathers on her body are worn and her tail feathers are too.

Once she molts, she will look beautiful.

I was thinking that too, but she didn’t molt like the other ones did. Is it normal not to molt in the fall like the rest did?

Age and diet? I've seen some pretty scruffy chickens who were being raised on corn, scraps, and koi fish pellets who had terrible feathering. A few of these birds were chicks I had hatched and given to a friend. The chicks I kept from the same hatch and fed 18-20% chick feed were nearly twice the size and in much better condition. Diet plays a huge role in how well feathered they are.

That being said, genetics can mess with feathering too. Lavenders in particular can have some sort of feather shredding gene but I'm unsure if it can effect non-lavender birds. Things like lice/mites that cause the birds to itch and pluck feathers can cause poor feathering.

She gets layer feed, 18%, just like the rest that have beautiful feathers. And she gets added vitamins in her water occasionally. I bought her as a chick in April. I don’t remember her breed but now that I think about it, she came with two others. The other two are a lot bigger than her and their feathers are fine.

Check her for lice and mites.

The feathers are nipped and worn. Observe to see if the other 2 that are pristine are picking at her and/or mounting her.
