Snow day here in Texas!
View attachment 4033128
Chickens don't appear to be happy but seem fine. No signs of frostbite. Their waterer was frozen but I just brought out a backup. Tonight will be the true test with lows in the middle teens.
Is the snow and Temps pretty normal for your area in Texas winter?
I've been mixing warm water in their food to make mash. They devour it!
Ours do also.. 🙂

Enjoying a warmer sunny day after days of cold and rain!

So chicken math has struck...

I have so many people wanting to buy eggs that I decided to get chicks to keep my production going. I'm thinking about 2 Olive Eggers and 2 BCM. I originally had 13 chicks and lost a few so have 10 total now. Figured 14 is a nice round number and these two breeds will add a little more variety to my egg carton.

I might get an extra in case something happens. I'm also considering building a larger coop and getting even more... (sigh)

Yaaay for chicken math ... That's awesome, I'd suggest going 3 of each tho in case you lose one the remaining still has a buddy. 🤗

Built a new brooder from a shipping crate I needed to get rid of. Probably a little overkill for just a few chicks but you can never have too much room.

Plan on using it as a backup "hospital" or maybe even for meat quail in the future.

As for the brooder, I'm going to attempt the mama heating pad method this time. In the past, I tried the warming plates (hated them: they were either too warm or too cold and hard to adjust height) and the heat lamp (better but makes it hard for the chicks to get away from heat and more of a fire hazard).
