~ A legend as old as time itself tells of time itself tells of a small family. Three brothers and their sister, amazing friends. They were all fiercely protective of each other, and made a formidable fighting force when one of them - or one of their friends - were in danger.
The legend said that the siblings would eventually split up, dividing the most powerful flock into four smaller flocks, none of which were nearly as strong as those siblings were when they fought together. It never specified how, leaving only one definite clue - that they would split - as to who those siblings would be.
The legend had been forgotten by almost all the chickens, except for some of the exceptionally old seniors, and those who did remember brushed it off as a old story.
Little did they know that legend was true.
The four siblings were born into the flock of a Swedish villager, who had a passion for raising rare chickens. While they were young, the small family was very close. As time will do, their parents, Maple and Torch, began to age, and by the time their chicks were just becoming adults, they had reached the end of their prime, especially Torch. One night, he was attacked by a fox, and if not for the skills of his four children he would have died then.
Hercules and Bolt were standing guard over their father, who was to weak to make it to the roost, or even the shelter of the coop. They could hear something moving in the bushes, and called the other two, Ginger and Steel, to come stand guard. Naturally, being asleep, they did not hear them call, and while Hercules and Bolt were out trying to find what was causing the sounds, the same fox came and killed their father. All the siblings made it to his side just in time to watch their beloved father take his last breath.
All four chickens, enraged and grief stricken, argued about who's fault it was all night long, blaming each other for his death.
By the time the sun rose, the once tightknit family was no more.
They had divided, each claiming an end of the village as their own, roaming from coop to coop at night, gaining the trust and respect of the other chickens.
And that brings us up to now.
The four flocks:
NORRA FLOCK:
Located on the northern side of the village. Made up of games, such as Malays and twentse. They are extremely territorial, cold hearted, and will attack for the slightest offense. (Ginger, lead hen)
VAAST FLOCK:
The largest and most diverse flock. Made up of many breeds, from orust to Rhode island reds to Cochin banties. They are patient but are not tolerant of trespassers, and are not afraid to push their authority to its proper bounds. (Steel, leader)
SODRA FLOCK:
Located on the south side of the village. Is a generally peaceful flock, but because of this they all get along very well with one another, and are a formidable attacking force. Is made up mainly of utility breed birds, such as RIRs, leghorns and new Hampshire reds. (Bolt, leader)
OSTER FLOCK:
Located on the eastern side of the village. Is made up almost entirely of ornamental breeds, such as brahmas, polishes, silkies, and old English game bantams. The many bantams will work together in pairs during a fight, and are not treated as any less of an opponent because of their generally small size. (Hercules, leader)
(Vaast = West
Norra = North
Sodra = South
Oster = East)

RANKS:
~Lead cock - Is in charge of the whole flock, and has the final say on everything that goes on.
~Lead hen - Lead cock's mate/second in command. Only if a lead hen dies may the lead cock and lead not be mates. If a lead cock dies, the highest ranking ground guard and his mate become the next leaders. If he does not have a mate, then the current lead hen retains her position. If there ends up being a bunch of confusion about this, PM me - ONLY if this ever happens.
)
~Sky-guard - watches sky for hawks and things
~Ground-Guard - watches ground and guards everything. Is highly respected.
~Scout - finds food for the flock
~Healer - is responsible for knowing how to treat both diseases and injuries. They may have a mate, but are forbidden from going broody and hatching chicks themselves. (There are no heavenly ancestors that guide the flock.)
~Broody - mother hen hatching eggs or raising chicks. Another broody may hatch eggs for a different hen, if that hen does not go broody.
~Chick - a baby chicken under 3 months of age
~Fledgling - a chick between 4 and 8 months of age
~Fledger - trains fledges - like mentors from warriors
Other important terms:
~Keeper - the chicken's word for humans, whether they keep chickens or not.
~Red-wing keepers (or just red wings) - the chicken's term for the Nazi soldiers that raided the village.

A cold silence settled over the village as the last red-wing keeper marched away, shouting irritably at the cows he was driving. They had taken all the cattle, the sheep, the horses, and many of the chickens. All the Keepers were dead or taken as prisoners.
A handsome blue-gray head appeared in the midst of a large evergreen bush, his eyes wide and nervous. He looked around warily, scanning each inky shadow for danger. He stepped out cautiously into the bright light of a full moon, shaking himself in an attempt to calm down. He stood up to his full height, and called out to his flock. "They're gone!" he crowed. "Its safe to come out!"
Slowly, one by one, chickens began to crawl out of the heavily damaged coops. Steel walked quickly over to his mother. "I'm fine" she grumbled, before he had a chance to speak. Steel smiled, then looked around at the broken gates and the massive holes in the runs. "I guess we don't have to worry too much about setting them all free, with all those giant holes and missing boards," he murmured.
"Nope. What you really have to worry about is your brothers and sister." Maple replied.
Steel's gaze instantaneously became dark. "They aren't my siblings anymore, Maple." He growled.
"Perhaps, but I am still nonetheless their mother" she replied cooly.
Steel stood up straighter. "We live in peace." He growled, "As enemies, but we tolerate each other. If someone was to ask for more than that...." He drifted off, becoming lost in memories.
"I know, Steel" Maple clucked softly. "I know."
