This is Violet. She (not really sure she is a girl) has been fine since she was born on April 22. Three days ago her feathers started coming out and her wings look loose, like she can't keep them tucked up. Do we need to wrap them?

Hi again, Colleen. Yes, wrap them. It´s angel wing. Tuck them up underneath where they should go, and bind them. Do it soon, they´re getting big. Then leave it 5 days and see what it´s like after that. If she manages to get the wraps off, just do it again. OK?

Thank you so much for the info. We are not intending on breeding.
Do you have other geese? Can´t remember. We´d love to see pics of them, and her with her wings all prettied up!

We have 2 other African and 2 Buff geese. We got them this spring and only the 1 African is having trouble

It tends not to affect all of them. Some say it´s diet, others say it´s genetic, some say it´s a mix of the two.... I´m not convinced there´s a simple answer. My geese bred a number of seasons with no probs, then suddenly, last year, the same pair produced youngsters that had angel wing, about half of them, I think. Doesn´t make sense to me, but wrap it for at least 5 days and see how it goes. You can take it off after 3 days, then wrap it immediately after. The 5 days should be enough to allow it to become settled and stronger. If not, do it again.

On angel wing it can be both diet and genetic. But most of us tend to feed the growth crumble too long and that is too much protein and can help cause angel wing! At 3 weeks old they should be taken off of growth crumbles. I go straight to adult pellets and oats. Plus as much green or grass and dandelion plants as they want... Grass should be their main diet... This helps lesson the angel wing.

Also the blood going into the wings is heavy and they have to exercise they wings to strengthen their muscles to hole their wings proper. Plus you need to wrap the wings before then pen feather's dry out or it is a waste of time taping!
