are these cornish X? i suppose if the little one doesn't grow much she should have a good quality of life...
the big one though... will she eventually croak of a heart attack? i feel like these birds are ticking time bombs...
here's a photo from 10 days ago.

they have grown since then. i will try to get some more pics today. you can see the size difference between the larger and the runts.

why in the world do these birds have to be SO dirty???

Yes both are cornish cross, CX. I butchered 22 out of 25. Lost one to drowning in a stock tank. still haven't figured that one out.... Kept these 2 to keep peace with my adult daughters. Tank, the big one, is really active. Out of all my birds i processed, i didn't see any enlarged hearts, and no fat on them, whatsoever. It kinda creeped me out, last time i raised CX they were very fatty birds. This time, they had FF, and free range. I am sold, so is hubby. Best tasting chicken i ever ate.. I have seen others post about keeping some but never the outcome. Soo we wait. I know my GLW rooster is madly in love with tank, time to fit her an apron!

here is the update on my slow growers. i separated out three of them to fatten for christmas. i guess this has been working since they are a bit bigger than the others.
i intend to process them friday and allow to rest in my fridge until christmas. sure wish they were bigger.
they will be 10 weeks old this friday and they are all females. the remaining 6 will be given an extra month- or whatever, i am throwing them in with the regular flock and as they fatten i will process them.

this one got curious.

they haven't been eating much today... wondering if they know it's over tomorrow. withholding feed after 5pm... will process around 7am.

Mine are on their last bag of food... when it is gone, it will be freezer camp time. I am not putting any more money into these birds. They are finally growing a bit, but I am past ready. We will have some smaller ones, but a few that should at least be in the 4 pound range, dressed. I am guestimating that they will be out of food right after Christmas.

I am trying hard not to let this batch get my spirits down. I have to keep in mind the wonderful success I had this summer with the first batch! We are eating one of the black broilers from the first batch tonight, oven bbq style LOL.

there three birds are no more. i would estimate that they are 6 lb birds. hard to say since i don't have a scale!
but they are a sort of standard size that you would get at the store, not huge, not small. it all went well. i ended up working in the rain- it had to be done tonight. i will post a photo later.

Mine lucked out this weekend LOL, husband decided he didn't want to process chickens, so we broke down and got a bag of feed for them and they have one more week! Maybe they will grow a little this last week!
