Hi all! I have a very sweet old man — bantam buff Orpington — not sure exactly how old he is because I got him as an adult but I know he's getting up there. He has always minded the cold but this year it seems worse. It's only mid fall and he has already had two episodes where his comb gets very dark and he acts sick, I think his elderly heart is just not handling the cold well. He bounces right back when I bring him inside for a bit.
Anyone have experience keeping sensitive chickens warm in the winter? We have two heat lamps but that doesn't seem to cut it.

Welcome To BYC

Where are you located in the world?
How cold is it?

Can you post photos of your rooster and his housing?

Darkening of the comb could be an indication of lack of oxygen. Could be if he's getting older he may be having some heart or organ failure.

How well ventilated is his coop?

Two heat lamps sounds quite warm and dangerous. If you are providing heat for him in his housing, then consider getting a coop heater that would be a little safer.

For birds that struggle in winter, do provide them with extra bedding and wind protection, but make sure the coop has adequate ventilation. Provide a nutritionally balanced poultry feed and fresh water.
