My hens are molting and noone is laying much right now. I am not going to run a light to the coop to create longer days, I am just going to let nature take its (expensive) course. What i want to know is should i discontinue layer pellets for the winter months and put them on a grower ration or something?

Find yourself a 20% protien layer if you can, if not then flock raisier or game bird. During molt then need the extra protien. If you have a large heritage breed they need it all the time. If you can not find anything with at least 18% protien then use some dry cat food or something else with good protien to add to their feed till after molt.
