Our current setup is that the chickens and ducks share a run but they have separate doors leading to their own coops.
We have food and water both inside the coop(s) and in the run.

Winter is coming up soon and we're trying to figure out how this should go. It's our first year with birds so, please bear with me.

Should we be keeping food and water in the coop and in the run? Or should it be enough for them to have it in their own respective coops?

Also, we live in AK where the temperatures can go below 0F for weeks. Are they out much during the winter?
The duck coop (house?) is about 12 square feet for 2 ducks and the chicken coop is around 20 square feet for 9 chickens. Do we need to increase coop size for them in anticipation that they might be staying indoors more?

I keep food and water in my coop. Some do some don't it's just a matter of preference.

I'm in Texas so we usually only go down to 20 degrees so my birds are outside, Your chicken coop really should be larger. The minimum suggested coop space is 2 feet per bantam 4 feet per standard. If your birds have to be inside the coop most of the winter they will need much more space. Also, 12 feet is technically big enough for ducks but it's going to get messy very quickly if they are confined in the winter.

Thanks. We just figured out why the chicken coop was so small. I think my husband may have misread it and thought it was 2sqft/chicken. Thank you for pointing that out. He'll be enlarging the coop over the weekend.
