I grow a hardy banana mostly for ornamental purposes. Years the main stalk does not freeze to the ground it will bloom in summer. It will form bananas but seldom do they completely mature.Funny I was just reading about things taking so much longer in the shorter hours. This fact about banana plants in Iceland was interesting.
"Icelandic banana production was much slower due to low levels of sunlight; Icelandic bananas took two years to mature, while it only takes a few months near the equator."
That's cool. I want a really big greenhouse that I can plant a bunch of non native fruit trees and have some serama running around inI grow a hardy banana mostly for ornamental purposes. Still I love the form and tropical look. I've receive many nice comments. It makes lots of babies. I have given many away over the years.
I am in zone 8a. I never would have considered Iceland banana habitat. That is surprising!
Build it super tall and wide!
My banana easily shoots up to 15 ft or so with the foliage canopy at as wide.
Build one commercial sized. Then you'll have plenty of work room.I was watching a show not long ago and the greenhouse they had looked like it was nearly half an acre and looked to be over 20ft tall it looked like a dream greenhouse. I have the space i just need the material. I have plans for several greenhouses of different sizes.
