What are some winter grasses I can plant for my hens? Low temperature right now is around 40degrees during the day and in the 20range at night

My grandma suggested buying some small bales of alfalfa hay for them in the winter, mine eat most of what I put out for them.

I think winter rye will sprout in that temp.

It is too late to sow any new grass. Once you get a hard freeze, the grasses are done for the year.

I second a small square of alfalfa. Try to find hay with a high percentage of leaves and fine stalks. It will provide endless entertainment and keep the yolks bright orange.
