I haven't had birds in about a year. I miss them and am looking to start a new flock. I need birds that are both winter hardy and are fairly good fliers so as to escape a nasty fox that frequents the area. Suggestions?

My best suggestion is the Jaer or Jaerhon. Fly well and originated in Norway.
How winter hardy do they need to be? Where are you?
Appenzeller/Spitzhauben, Campine, Hamburg, Lakenvelder, are other ideas.

A couple others that have wintered well here are ancona and leghorn.

I'm in Vermont so they'd have to be pretty hardy! : )

Thanks for the suggestions....I'll check 'em out!

A Norwegian Jaerhon is an excellent suggestion. Another bird that would fit the bill perfectly, and is much more readily available is the Silver Spangled Hamburg, and they are excellent layers, occasionally laying more than 300 eggs per year. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
