Winter heat lamp placement?

I'm in sunny California and in January the temps were in the 70's and at times almost 80 degrees! Suddenly late February it starts snowing, hailing and it's really cold, like 26 degrees. Because my hens are not used to these cold temps I put a heat lamp in the coop but only have it on at night. When I see the girls out in the morning I turn it off. Maybe they don't need it. . . but it makes me feel better!
