Winter in Michigan-adding light- more questions

I have feed and water inside during the winter. For water I use a heated dog dish.

I also have a light in the coop, 4am to 8am, from late September through March. Food and water in the coop, as it's there when they get up, and it's just easier.
Chicken wire won't protect them from predators, and rodents can easily get inside the coop, so it's best to have hardware cloth everywhere instead.
