Winter is coming to the south

I open and close the coop based on their anticipated time and my availability. Could be open at 4 am and closed at 11 pm. I have considered an auto door as a fail safe for me over sleeping. I really bend the rule with coop size - they must have access to get out.

My DH is up before it's light out so he lets the girls out. I lock em up in the evening. I'm terrified of those auto doors. I'm too worried a chicken will get squished.
