Winter Pasture for Poultry

We broadcast the seed throughout the pasture. The kale is planted in the garden.

Here are some of the spreader types I have used:

Just broadcast the seed anywhere you can get a spreader. It will grow under trees, fence rows and in the open. If you free range the birds will help themselves. If your birds are confined, just hand pick or use a push mower with a catcher.

Here is another idea.... go today to your local feed/seed store and ask if they have any leftover winter pasture seed from last year. The germination rate will be a bit lower, but they should sell it for a discount.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Can easily scale down to work on my little acre +. In addition to kale, our chickens like chard, which will grow year round in mild winter areas.

Can this be planted or broadcast in the yard or around the outside of the chicken coop? Does TSC carry wheatseed or kale seed? thank you

We use a broadcaster, but you can hand spread the seed. You would need to contact your local TSC or farms tore to see what varieties of winter pasture seed they carry. each store carries a bit different product.

For your winter pasture plantings.....do you get snow there? Is it frost resistant? We have killing frost by the end of this month usually but snow usually holds off till November. DO you have any suggestions on what to plant?

My veggie garden is not down producing yet but the tomatoes might be done in a week or two. I would like to plant something for the hens since they will access to the garden once its down with veggies. I cant let them in yet since they have discovered tomatoes & that they like them.
