Winter Shelters for Ducks

I began my life with chickens this spring. I have 11 hens and one rooster. My daughter brought me 4 black Cayuga ducks for mothers day. As the ducks grew they were put in with the chickens and loved to go under the coop which is about 18 inches off of the ground but as they grew they became quite the bullies. They began to boss even the poor rooster around, even chased everyone out of the coop. One day I found a hen in the nesting box clearly sick. I took her in the house and discovered that she was dehydrated. The ducks were moved into their own pen with their own house. All is well now. I love my ducks as well as my chickens even though the ducks can be little stinkers. lol. They have been laying eggs and sleeping in their home but I do not coop them at night. I have a pretty secure enclosure with a lock on the door, so they go in and out as they want to. It is only November and here in Missouri we can get pretty cold , so we will see what this winter holds. Good luck with your adventure. Get well soon.

If you have a house with good ventilation with lots of deep bedding and they are protected from wind rain and snow they don’t need extra heat they are wearing a down jacket after all.
