I have 4 buff orping. and 1 Silverlaced wyandotte, and was wondering if this breed of chicken goes out in the winter time into their covered run. I'm concerned because i have a small 17 square foot coop with outside mounted nest boxes, and I'm worried that if they do not go out in the winter they will start pecking. So I'm wondering if i should give one chicken away now. Thanks for any help.

Hello! I have had both Wyandottes and Buff orpintons and all go out in the winter time and got along just fine. I think your coop is just the right size for 5 chickens!

Depends on the chickens. Some will go out in the winter. Some seem afraid of the snow. I don't think you should give away chickens unless it turns into a problem. You may have the eggs freeze in outside mounted boxes.
It's good that your thinking now rather than waiting for an emergency. Good luck.

Thank You, I been so nervous that I will have to get rid of one of my Buff's . Do You this it is bad to swap chickens. My friend wants to swap a Buff for a Black Australorp, I feel bad giving trading one of my chicks. They are 3 months old. and i only have the room ofr the 5. What do you think?

My husband insulated the nest boxes, i hope i wont have frozen egge. What time of day do they lay eggs?

If they get bored being in the coop, in the winter there are things you can do to keep them occupied. Hang heads of cabbage, for one. There'll be lots of info about this as we get closer to winter. Also you can do searches to read past threads. Go to the top of the page and click on search in the blue bar.
Most people here would frown on swapping chickens. It is stressful on the chickens, and can introduce disease. That being said it can be done. If you and your friend want more chickens and breeds, think about expanding you coop and run.

They can lay anytime, but it seems mostly in the morning.
