Okay, not the flavor, but actual greens I can grow in the coop window over the winter since I plan on having it heated. Any suggestions of what the birds and chicks (who'll be pretty much grown by then) would like and that will winter over nicely? I'll create a planter all along the 7 foot window sill and grow.....? They love the wild strawberries and their leaves, but will it continue to grow all year? Anyone? Beuhler? Beuhler?

If you have the planter located where the plants will not freeze you have several options the chicks will love...Mint, Lavender, Rosemary, Oregano, etc. Check out the Fresh Eggs Daily blog as she is a strong proponent for herb utilization.

Would you possibly have a link to that? I'm ancient, and so is my dial-up line.... makes it REAL hard to search and find things.

Thank You

CK

My girls seem to love Basil, purple, sweet, it doesn't seem to matter which variety other than when the Thai Basil is allowed to flower, they go crazy over it. I have rosemary and lavender growing and am going to move them within reach to see if they like it and move the Basils away from the pen so they can recover.
I also saw an article somewhere about growing sprouts of various grains to feed them and will post what happens with that once I try it.

Hi, I copied the info from that website. The site has a ton of pictures so I figured this would be easier than trying to wait for everything to load.

Here it is:

Thank you for taking your time to help me here, do you happen to know which ones are the fastest growing and leafiest?

I am also new to raising chickens and am reading and learning as I go.
I live just outside of Phoenix so up to this point my main concern has been 110+° temps.
Having conquered that hurdle, I am now starting to concentrate more on providing more natural/organic forage for my rapidly growing flock of 25 birds ranging from 10-13 weeks of age.
I moved the lavender to within reach and like everything else it drew immediate attention.
In no time they were picking at what they can reach thru the chicken wire and the scent of lavender instantly began to waft thru out the pen area.
ROFL, instant air freshener.

Do you have any idea if wild strawberries will grow over the winter? I found some wild peppermint out front last year, so I can use some of that.
