Winterizing My Ventilation

So, after struggling with this intense -40 and lower cold snap we've had here in the Rockies, I decided to winterize my ventilation. I only have 5 adults and 5 chicks inside my 6x8 coop, so I've had my coop become too cold and too ventilated these past few weeks, resulting in 4 10 week old chicks death (partially due to my own awful planning, but they are under a heat lamp).
I needed a way to keep heat in while letting moisture out or absorbing moisture. My answer?
Hay!
Slightly breathable but holds some heat.

Yup just over the ventilation

OH! The first pic has sunlight so you see hardware cloth over the vents. The second pic has vents in the dark so all i saw was hay on the ground to the left. I had to really look hard before I realised there was hay stuffed into the vents! Interesting idea. I guess if you find it to be too much you could remove hay from one ore two vents. I look forward to updates.

Just a suggestion I saw recently on here someone with a school bus coop wanting to keep snow and drafts out but keep good ventilation. Someone mentioned furnace filters in the windows/vents.

Not yet. It will be hard to as it's -40°F (-40°C) here this morning.
