I know there are 50,000 threads on winterizing. I still want advice. Once the keets were gone, the remaining 10 all moved into the old coop on their own. So I get a new garden shed, what evs.
I've cleaned all the sand out of the shed and distributed it between the run, the coop, and the "sun room (tractor's run), and put the polycarbonate panels back up on the "sunroom".
We're going to get the wood painted asap on the fencing, so for the moment I've removed the sunshades and tarps. I Think they like the sunshades down, as with it getting cooler they like to be able to find a sunbeam.
I've never had a ventilation problem in that coop so not worried about that, and 10 probably won't even need supplemental heat, though it's set up to provide it.
I'm wondering about the run. The sand is going to get wet,we usually have wet falls and springs. The property slopes so water will run off, and sand does dry quickly. But wet sand can harbor coccidia. If I put the silver tarps sideways I can cover the whole thing, but then they'd be in the dark. I can just recover the top, but that won't block side rain or blowing snow,if we get any.
If there's such a thing as a clear tarp, I'll get it. I guess I cld put grommets in it? Otherwise, guarantee the wind will find a way to pull it up and send it flying on the interstate. But is clear plastic ok, bc I think it emits some sort of gas- and would the sun make it too hot?
I love it open like it is at the moment, but it sure looks vulnerable and exposed after being covered all summer!

Our property slopes too, and makes all sorts of drainage problems! The coops are partway up the slope, but close to the bottom, so all of the water from up the hill flows through the chicken and Guinea runs. Trenching and water diversion has been my most successful way to deal with this and I have lots to do. Although we’ve despised our drought, it has kept the poultry runs free of mud!

There are clear and translucent tarps on Amazon. I’ve also put up clear plastic from rolls of hardware store plastic and staples it up for a one season use.
