Wire on the pen- single or double layer for safety?

Hello chickens,

I am building a pen for my peacock, and most sites i consulted reccomend 2 x 4 wire on the inside and 1 x 1 hex wire on the outside layer. Why? It will more then double the cost. I wonder if I get 1 x 1 wire for the whole thing, should be sufficient.
We have all sorts of predators, I just need to know whether double later of wire is necessary.

None of my pens are double layered but I also have 2 pyreneese so predators are no problem. Coons can reach in 1X2 and grab a head. My growout pens ar 1/2X1/2 wire in 8'X8 to keep out chicken snakes.

We do it that way. Have every type of predator here - coons, possums, hawks, eagles, owls -- the coyotes have been howling their heads off past couple of nights.
