wire roofing is it OK?

I strongly believe in hardware cloth everywhere, sides, top and apron.Keeps just about everything out.I used to use the netting on the top and 3' down from the top.I did lose an occasional bird due to getting a spur caught in the netting, that was the reason I switched to hardware cloth. It's easy to roll out and nail and is very secure.

as ruff as it is on your hands using it, you'd think it would scalp him... firm believer in netting on tops, never had a spur hung on anything in netting for 25 years.
One way or another, somethings gonna happen over the years no matter what you use. But netting to me is the safest and also most popluar matterial for tops and the easiest to use.
Generally, think about a bird flying up to the top, they dont hit with their fett, the hit with their back and head/neck.
But like I said, if you do it long enough, eventually, you'll see about everything, but spurs hung in netting really is a 1 in a million shot

I don't have any spooky birds,so the hardware cloth works good for me.I use to use the netting on the top and 3' down the side, but the squirrels liked to chew it.If you have spooky birds,I would go with the netting,it is much more forgiving then hardware cloth.

I've used the 2x4 wire but prefer 1x2 or 1" poultry wire. I just feel the smal;ler holes make it harder for predators to get in and less chance of a flighty bird to hang a wing in the wire and damage or kill themselves. Kerry
