The member lives in a very dry climate, that likely helps with the setup.

Then cleaning the poop out quarterly instead of constantly.

Sounds like a great way to provide fly habitat.

Ty for all the answers! I guess we'll try a simple shallow platform with the PDZ first, see how my family gets along with the task.
( We've never tended cat litter boxes. Dog person here. And now, chicken person. lol)

If it weren't for chicken's heat sensitivities, I'd be wondering about the composting toilet method of dropping humanure in a chamber below the toilet, then baking into a powder, to prevent flies and odours.

Btw, re flies, we were assuming the long-left poop would be covered with PDZ.

Not quite a cat litter scenario.

Again, I'm trying to work around family doing the chores.

If this is all a goal for less chores, look into Deep Dry Bedding method with organic materials. I do this because I hate chores and it allows me to basically only clean out the soiled bedding once a year from where they sleep
