Wiring up the computer Fan

A GREAT way to power a cpu fan is to use an old model railroad transformer. Wire it to the accesory side, not the track side. They're VERY inexpensive as they're out of fashion with the now radio controlled direction of model railroading. They're also reostat controlled meaning once you hook it up, simply adjust the speed as you'd like with the control arm/speed adjuster. I know this because I've got a homemade stir plate built for free from old cpu parts & old model railroad transformer. This type of setup is a common build in the homebrew community, that's where I gained this knowledge. Just my $.02 and what I'm going to install come next week!

I have a few old computers. Which fan is this? Is this the one in the power supply? Or is it the one that goes over the processor chip? I want to add this thing, so a good discription of where it is at would help. Thanks.

Most of us use the case fans they are about 3 inches by 3 inches and fit just in front of the thermostat where the factory fans would go. They are 12 volt. I have seen some of the Processor fans used but the case fans are I think easier to mount I used two 2 1/2 inch #10 bolts and used washers between the bolt head and the styrofoam and also to back up on the inner side of the styrofoam then just screwed them into the holes in the fan housing, remember to leave some air space in back. I have pics I will see if I can find them.

This is the fan I have. It says Ball, cooler master, DC12V, 1.32W on it. So I guess I could use it. On the side pic you can see the fan is just small and the large part can come off. I took this out of a computer. It has a red, yellow, and black wires. So I guess I should try the yellow and red. I always think the black is for the ground????

I turned the fan around so it will blow on the inside of the large part making it come out the sides. Now I need to see wire it and see if it works. How am I doing so far?

I used the fan that was in the power-supply of an old computer. I installed just the same way as done by chicksdigit, with the addition of a piece of tin (an "air-baffle") underneath the fan to deflect the air to keep it from blowing DIRECTLY upon the eggs.

I would show a picture, but my "computer picture-program" is currently on the FRITZ !!!

I know this is a super old post, but does anyone know if you can attach 2 fans to one plug? My one fan doesn't seem to be moving much air. You can't feel anything with your hand right in front of it.
