We are getting 8 chicks on Monday and plan to keep them in the house for a few weeks and then move them to an Unheated garage. I bought a 125w heat lamp to use for this. Is this too small or too large of a bulb and should it be left on 24/7? A small coop is all ready for them but I will be making a larger one as soon as the weather improves.
Thanks!

Well, 125w... how big is your brooder? I think if it is not a tiny little cardboard box you are OK. I am pretty sure that is what I am using. I wouldn't put them in the unheated garage until 7 weeks. 6 weeks the earliest. It could be too cold without the heat lamp.

You might want to get everything set up and do a trial run. Your light bulb should be okay in the house, but may not be warm enough for outside in the garage and yes, it is left on 24/7. I keep my temperature at about 90-95 degrees (with areas that are cooler if they want to move out of the heat) for the 1st week and then 5 degrees less per week. There is a ton of information on this site, so spend some time looking at past posts about new chicks. Enjoy!

Thanks folks. I just found this site today and I feel a little overwhelmed with all the information on it. It is scary to see

how much I don't know.
