Another question on Easter Eggers: At our county fair for juniors, would they go in the "Any other Standard Breed Non-Recognized" or "Any egg type crossbred"? Juniors have entered both ways and judges have been pretty lenient on them...as long as they aren't entered in the American class. Or, should we recommend a "Backyard" class? Thank you!WJPA DISCUSSION THREAD
Most of you have never heard of the Wisconsin Junior Poultry Association. That is why this thread exists. I am posting a discussion thread here, and I will answer questions about our organization. I am not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this thread, so you may direct it otherwise if you wish.
The WJPA is basically the American Poultry Association for kids who live in Wisconsin. So unless you live in Wisconsin, the information in this thread is not relevant to you.We help run a lot of the junior divisions of Wisconsin APA shows and organize a lot of activities and events for the kids.
During Wisconsin International the activities we do include a speaking competition, a poster competition, an egg competition, poultry quiz bowl, Pullet Surprise competition, showmanship, a poultry photo competition, a raffle, showmanship, and ACE. And who could forget the most important part, our junior show?
I am helping coordinate the photography competition, so I can answer any questions in this area.
I am also pushing to add a new Poultry Judging Contest, so any support there would help.
Thank you! Any questions?
You can find us on Facebook atWhy would I join the WJPA? Are you a 4-H member or parent of a 4-H member who would like to show poultry at some of the bigger local shows? Would you like to become involved with other youth in engaging, educational poultry activities? Want to do showmanship at Wisconsin International and eventually become a showmanship judge?
These are good reasons to join the WJPA. There are also many great leadership opportunities.
What is ACE?
This link will explain the ACE program. When you complete all four books, you can become a certified showmanship judge, and the pre-apprenticeship judging program. http://youthexhibitionpoultry.org/achievements.htm
What is the Avian Quiz Bowl?
The Avian Quiz Bowl is a quiz competition where teams study from the Avian Quiz Bowl Manual.
This link will bring you to this year's information.

You can find us at most Wisconsin shows, so why don't you hop over and ask us a bit about the WJPA?

Recommending a backyard class would be a good move. Technically Easter Eggers aren’t a breed, (Standard breed not recognized is not Standard breed then either) they’re also not an egg hybrid. I guess I would go with egg type crossbred, but really either works. Ask your superintendent I guess.Another question on Easter Eggers: At our county fair for juniors, would they go in the "Any other Standard Breed Non-Recognized" or "Any egg type crossbred"? This confusing topic is why our county is just now adding a backyard class, but it should have come a lot sooner.
Anything that is a mixed breed but not bred for eggs or meat. Or project breeds. What are some other breeds that would fit into a Backyard class?
