Finally Watertown allows chickens starting with two. Very excited for my grandchildren. Starting with Golden Comet and Speckled Sussex. What do you think?

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Golden Comet is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are egg laying machines. Speckled Sussex are a wonderful breed for children as they are friendly annd gentle; good layers of brown eggs as well. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Hello!
400

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to join the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC.

Hi and welcome to BYC - great that you have decided to join us. I'm sure your grandchildren are as excited as you!

All the best

Welcome! Nice to see someone from Wisconsin! I don't have any experience with Comets, but I had a Speckled Sussex a couple years ago and she was great. Very friendly with large brown eggs! Both of them are supposed to be cold hearty, so they should be fine. Where are you planning on getting them from? I'm in Southern Wisconsin, too, and am trying to figure out which chickens to get and where to get them from.

Welcome.
I too am in Wisconsin but up near Appleton. There are a couple hatcheries in the state with limited selection, I just bought chicks from Craig's list ads, granted that is straight run unless you get something auto sexing like the Cream Legbars I got a few of.
Speckled Sussex is on my wishlist.

Do you have housing figured out? The prefab coops are garbage but could get you by a year or two with just two chickens if you can't build something yourself.
