I'm a new member in the process of completing my first chicken coop! I knew starting a backyard flock of my own was in my future after recently visiting some family in SW Minnesota; my family were originally city-dwellers who relocated to the country and had their own egg laying flock of 60 hens, plus annually raise 100 meat birds. My city currently allows 4 egg laying hens for properties under two acres (most lot sizes in Shoreview are approximately 1/3 of an acre).

I have a seven year old son, and a 10 month old puppy...so why not add a small flock of pullets?!

I found my coop through craigslist (for a killer steal, I might add) and plan to make some modifications before adding pullets. I will do my best to document as much of the process as possible, and have a STRONG feeling I'll be turning to this awesome corner of the inter-webs for answers ranging from "how much oyster shell and/or grit do I put in my feed?" to lord only KNOWS!

Happy to be a part of this community!

! Great to have you aboard! Glad you added chickens to your life! Enjoy and best of luck!!

I FINALLY purchased my flock:
2-week old hatchlings of the following:
2 Buff Orps
2 Golden Laced Wyandottes (these ladies are 5-weeks old)
1 White Ameraucana

The chicks were purchased from a local, family owned store. I was told they were 90% female. Yesterday in MN, the weather was warm and the sun was hot. I decided to take the girls outside to experience the grass. They did AWESOME...but one of my Wyandottes looked like she was trying to crow. Is this an indication that she's a rooster, or do hens behave this way as well?
