with storm coming, let hens out?

Mine have never been bothered by your everyday average thunder storm, so my only concern is the high winds. Hoping they go to their coop if it gets to be too much.

My girls are confined to their coop & run, I've got it entirely covered with heavy plastic & tarp so they should be dry and sheltered from the wind. The plastic is clear and I can see them going about their business in the run. We've got torrential rain at this point but the wind hasn't arrived yet, so we'll see how well my weatherproofing holds up. If it gets torn up, the chickens are coming in the house...we can give them the run of the downstairs bathroom and they can roost on the edge of the tub lol

Mine are not smart enough to get in out of the rain. They go back in the coop fine at night, but they will just stand in the rain getting soaked, so if they were mine I wouldn't let them out. I know if the storm got bad I would worry for them and I would be the one out in the rain trying to round them up. I know myself well enough to know I couldn't just sit there and let them figure it out on their own.

I can just picture a bunch of rolly polly chickens tumble weeding through the yard.
Did you mean this wide load??

I've seen mine be blown around during high winds during the one time I was silly enough to let them out. I ended up with my hens all in a line, braced against my feet and legs to keep from being blown over. They did go rolling like squawking tumbleweeds at first!

Hi Everyone!

It's 9:30pm here in Central PA. We got the brunt of the storm around 6:00. I opened my coop this morning (8am) before the wind started up ( the girls stay in a fenced yard). At 4pm, DH went to lock the coop up - really windy and lots of rain - and the girls were all in the yard! They were loving the rain and wind. Some were scratching on the ground, others on the perch we have for them. They were wet but happy! We closed the door to the coop at the normal time 7:00.

The wind started here around 5 ish and is awful now. I have one poor girl who is molting and looks horrible I hope she stays warm. We have had 80 degree weather up until just a few days ago so I think we are all having a hard time adjusting to this COLD weather!! May see a little snow in the morning, smells like it. I gave the girls oatmeal when they went to bed. I am a nut and I worry about my girls, Their coop was pretty comfortable when I locked them up so hopefullt they will do ok...Be safe everyone!

I let mine out this morning. They were either in the barn with the cows or under something during the day. they were soaked at coop time. My reds were and are always the last to go in. tomorrrow I may wait until later to let them out.
