Hello everyone!
Im new to both chickens and BYC. My girlfriend and I ended up with a dozen chicks six ducklings from TSC. Coop is up and birds are ready to move out. Live along lake Ontario in farm country but haven't had chickens since I was very little (mid twenties now). I am into obtaining sustainable local food, doesn't get much more local than at home!

4 speckled sussex mutts (feathered legs)
4 dixie rainbows
2 tetra tints
2 barred rocks
6 mutt brown ducks (Im guessing khaki cambell)

I love the color and size variation in my little flock. Everyone in my family told me their old wives tales and techniques on brooding and raising, so far between this page and them I think Im pretty well off. Luck seems to be on my side off all the straight run chicks only one rooster seems to have popped up, I think Im in the clear because they are almost 8 weeks old. My only regret was not buying local, but next year for sure.

Oh and as of now my ducklings seem to hate me lol. They only want to be near me when I have feed or treats. The chickens actually purr when we pet them!

Welcome to BYC!

It takes time for babies to over come their fear of you. As far as they are concerned you are a predator! Just keep handling them and give them time to learn to trust you. Eventually they will come around.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Welcome to our flock!

So the TSC chicks turned out to be different breeds than advertised. The "speckled sussex" are definitely dark Brahma. Out of all the supposed pillets I now have 5 roos. The ducks and chickens are all doing great, I love this site.
