Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a picture of Big Bird before the removal process, but here is the "after."
When the large chunk of matter was under her skin, all that was visible was that round black, scaly spot. As I described in the previous comment, the edges of the "scab" were loose and I could feel that the matter wasn't attached to anything under her skin. So it was easy to pull out.
The little pieces are from the really deep hole that was beneath that. And they felt more "attached." I used a sanitized bobby pin to scoop them out. You can see, in the hole, that there is still some of that whitish matter, but I didn't feel like I could remove what was left without causing Big Bird to bleed.
