Wow I was just reading over a lot of the posts and it sure seems there is a lot of wobbbling and other neuro type things going on.
I received a shipment of keets, bantam cochins, and silkies from a well known poultry place last Thursday from down here. I ordered five keets and got six and immediately understood why when I looked at them. One of the keets was not well. It looked as if he was trapped in his shell too long or something. He held his head down level and seemed to not be able to lift it, was very wobbly and paddled one leg out to the side. Sometimes both. He was in general just really off balance. I thought it was something neurological as a result of a trauma he may have experienced getting out of the egg. Given that he really had not had time to be exposed to much and have it progress that fast, I can only guess?
He was shipped last Wednesday and got there Thursday. Now his head and neck seem much stronger but one of his legs just does not work right. I checked him for birth defects and range of motion by picking him up and flipping him over and moving both legs and comparing them. He does not seem to have anything broken, missing or underdeveloped. Now he seems to having more trouble moving around. He really has trouble with one leg more than the other. One kind of still paddles out to the side, more straight at the knee like he cannot control it. He hop/ flops around.
But gosh does he try!! I have not witnessed him eating but he does not seem to be failing either. He hunts around like he is looking for bugs. He goes so far as to prop himself (very smart bird) on the side ledge of the brooder (wood boards and chicken wire) so he does not fall down. When they start to scurry around though he falls down and sometimes just paddles that leg in the air. It is heart breaking. He does now have a little loose stool but not sure what that is from. The problem is sometimes he gets exhausted and just cannot get up again and lies there and everyone else runs over him like he is part of the floor. Otherwise he seems to be trying his best to thrive. What does everyone think? Is there a disease that can affect a little one to that degree when they are just a day or two old? Is this a hatching injury? Poultry company, as far as I know has a pretty good rep and has been around for a while.
All suggestions or information is welcome! Thank you!!
